A Message from the Lieutenant Governor
of British Columbia
It is with great pleasure that I extend a happy 2009 to all British Columbians! I look forward to another eventful year as Lieutenant Governor, visiting communities throughout British Columbia, participating in many celebrations and honouring the people of our province!
This year I look forward to further expanding the literacy program started in 2008. The Write Me a Story project, designed to encourage literacy development, is well underway and to date I have received hundreds of stories from children of all ages across the province. I hope to receive many more stories as the year progresses and anticipate visiting as many participating schools as practicable.
Also as part of the literacy initiative, I am working with the Government House Foundation to visit remote communities and to facilitate, where I can, the provision of much needed books. We are partnering with Rotary and other community service
clubs throughout British Columbia to assist and support the delivery of books to those communities wishing to participate. Early in 2009 I will again visit Kingcome Inlet, along with members of the Sunshine Rotary Club of Richmond, as the first community and club to be partnered in the program.
I think that today, more than any time in recent history, it is vital for each of us to reach out to those around us, to offer our time and our support to others when and as often as we can. As Canada and countries around the world face economic uncertainty, we must join together – as families, as communities – to help each other through these difficult and trying times.
We must also remember those Canadians in the Armed Forces who are posted around the world, particularly in conflict zones like Afghanistan where they face extreme danger on a daily basis. They are away representing us as Canadians, reflecting our values, our beliefs, and aiding those people who do not live in the peaceful and free society with which we are blessed here in Canada. Let us all pray for the welfare of our soldiers and for their safe return to their families.
I encourage everyone to check here frequently throughout the year for information on upcoming events, literacy project developments and news from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. As the representative of Her Majesty The Queen in British Columbia, I look forward to meeting many of you as the year unfolds and I wish all the people of this great province the best for 2009!
